The Project
The Three Springs Hybrid Project by Trina Solar is a groundbreaking initiative featuring a 400MW solar farm paired with a 400MW/1600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to meet the rising demand for renewable energy in Western Australia’s north region. Connected to Western Power’s 330kV transmission line through a purpose-built substation, this project aligns with the strategic energy needs identified in the SWIS Demand Assessment 2023-2042. The assessment highlights a strong demand growth driven by new and expanding industries, notably in the production of renewable hydrogen for global export—a sector poised for significant development at the Mid West Clean Hydrogen Hub in the Oakajee Strategic Industrial Area.
With anticipated new loads of 1.8GW from industrial expansion and electrification in the northern region, Three Springs is strategically positioned to address this rapid demand growth. The combination of large-scale solar with long-duration energy storage offers a cost-effective and reliable source of renewable energy, providing essential grid capacity, enabling quick responses to grid demands, and optimizing energy use for the region’s growing industries.
Location
The Three Springs Hybrid Project is situated at 3688 Eneabba-Three Springs Road in Kadathinni, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the town of Three Springs.
